“Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. Proverbs 3:5 AMP

Wise words from King Solomon! This is part of a formula for following God’s will for your life. Notice that opposed to trusting God is trusting your own judgement! Solomon knew that if left to himself, he would ultimately fails in his endeavors.  Early in his reign the Lord appeared to him in a dream and asked him what he desired to have. His answer speaks volumes about where his heart truly was:

“In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night; and God said, “Ask [Me] what I shall give you.”Then Solomon said, “You have shown Your servant David my father great lovingkindness, because he walked before You in faithfulness and righteousness and with uprightness of heart toward You; and You have kept for him this great lovingkindness, in that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is today. 7So now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in place of David my father; and as for me, I am but a little boy [in wisdom and experience]; I do not know how to go out or come in [that is, how to conduct business as a king]. 8Your servant is among Your people whom You have chosen, a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. 9So give Your servant an understanding mind and a hearing heart [with which] to judge Your people, so that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge and rule this great people of Yours?”

1 Kings 3:5-9 AMP

Here is the first key to following God, a understanding mind and a hearing heart.” Take note that an understanding mind is in relation to the execution of righteousness in regard to judgement. Today we have the honor and privilege to have the Holy Spirit available to us for guidance and direction. This “understanding” Solomon desired came from a “hearing heart.”

If we are to have the same success in our lives, we must have hearing hearts and not reasoning minds! The Scripture is clear about the condition of the mind!

“What the eyes see [enjoying what is available] is better than [craving] what the soul desires. This too is futility and chasing after the wind.”

Ecclesiastes 6:9 AMP

The warning to believers is to be satisfied with the mercies of God that we experience and not to be driven by the base cravings of our flesh for what the flesh thinks it should have! The Apostle Paul warned the Church at Colossi,

For the sinful nature has its desire which is opposed to the Spirit, and the [desire of the] Spirit opposes the sinful nature; for these [two, the sinful nature and the Spirit] are in direct opposition to each other [continually in conflict], so that you [as believers] do not [always] do whatever [good things] you want to do. Colossians 5:17 AMP

To the Church at Rome he wrote,

“For those who are living according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh [which gratify the body], but those who are living according to the Spirit, [set their minds on] the things of the Spirit [His will and purpose]. 6Now the mind of the flesh is death [both now and forever--because it pursues sin]; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace [the spiritual well-being that comes from walking with God--both now and forever]; 7the mind of the flesh [with its sinful pursuits] is actively hostile to God. It does not submit itself to God’s law, since it cannot, 8and those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God.”

Romans 5:5-8 AMP

I wan to encourage you today to take time to be thankful for the grace of God that has been extended to you through the death of Christ! When it is all said and done, it is only that for which we labored for Christ that matter in eternity!

Have a blessed day, Pastor Ken
